Blustery Day at Versailles

15 mai

We didn't have class in the morning today since we were taking a group trip to Versailles.  So during the morning, we climbed up the Notre Dame bell tower.  There were a lot more stairs than I expected!  I always  forget how big Notre Dame really is.  It was neat going up to the top of Notre Dame first of all because of the great view of Paris.  I also liked seeing the gargoyles up close.  They have such personality and I imagined them coming to life like in the Disney hunchback movie.

That's Sacre Coeur in Montmartre up on the hill in the background.

You can see the Eiffel Tower in the back right there.

They called this bell tower area Quasimodo's lair.  Victor Hugo wrote the book Notre Dame de Paris about Quasimodo during the mid 1800s because city officials were wanting to tear down Notre Dame.  Hugo's book made Notre Dame popular again and it has been safe from destruction since.

We went to Versailles that afternoon with our whole group.  There were so many people there that touring the castle was a bit claustrophobic and stressful, but it was still beautiful nonetheless.

My favorite part of the castle was all the beautiful marble on the walls.

Curtain hook with character.

Saying hi to ourselves in the Hall of Mirrors where the Treaty of Versailles was signed that ended WWI.

This balcony is right off of the King's room.  Louis XIV would come out every morning onto this balcony to greet the court/nobles.  If you had a high status in world of nobility, you go to go in and watch the King get dressed and ready for the day.  You could also watch the King and his family eat their meals.  Versailles has beautiful gardens and fountains but it was really cold and windy when we were there so I will go back later this week when it is warmer to enjoy the gardens.  After Versailles, I went to the military museum at Invalides.  I saw the medieval armor and weapons rooms as well as the WWI/WWII rooms.

These reminded me of Robin Hood.

This reminded me of A Knight's Tale
